Pre-Flight Planning

What's the minimum age for a baby to fly?

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) guidelines in India, there is no minimum age for a baby to fly. However, airlines have their own policies regarding the minimum age of infants they allow onboard. This is typically in the range of 2 days to 7 days.

The minimum age for infants considered by IndiGo is 2 days and by Air India, SpiceJet and Akasa is 7 days.
Airlines consider babies as infants if they are under 2 years of age on the date of travel.

In case of a medical emergency, some airlines such as Air India have an exception to the minimum age guidelines. In such cases, you will need a medical certificate from your pediatrician and clearance from the airline’s medical department.

Are infants required to have a ticket for air travel?

Yes, infants are usually required to have a ticket for air travel, even though they might not occupy a separate seat. Airlines generally charge infant fares, commonly known as an infant ticket or lap child fare. The fare is fixed and is about ₹1500 per infant. While booking the ticket, you have to declare that you are traveling with an infant.

Can I book a seat for my baby?

In India, almost no airlines allow booking separate seats for an infant, and they have to be seated on the lap of an adult accompanying them. Some airlines such as Air India may provide bassinets for infants on request, typically for long-haul flights, but availability depends on aircraft type.

Tip: There is a limit on the number of infants allowed in a flight, usually it is 6 or 12 infants per flight, depending on the size of the aircraft . Thus, it is advisable to book the tickets well in advance.

Is there a limit on the number of infant tickets per adult passenger?

Airlines allow one infant per adult passenger for travel on their lap. Additional infants may require another adult or a separate seat purchase in case the airline is ready to provide an escort. No airline allows a single adult passenger to carry two infants on her/his lap.

Tip: If you are travelling with more than one infant, every infant needs to be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18 years.

What documents do I need while during air travel with infant?

  • Birth Certificate: This is the primary proof of your baby’s age and identity.
  • Passport & VISA : Required for international travel.
  • Vaccination Certificate: Check if any specific vaccinations are required for your destination, especially for international travel.
  • Medical Clearance (if applicable): Required for pre-existing medical conditions.

How should I dress my baby for air travel?

Dressing your baby in comfortable layers is key for air travel. Consider the following tips:

  • Comfortable Clothing: Choose soft, breathable fabrics like cotton that won’t irritate your baby’s skin. Avoid clothes with too many buttons, zippers, or tight elastics.
  • Layering: Airplanes can have varying temperatures, so dress your baby in layers that can be easily added or removed to adjust to the cabin’s temperature changes.
  • Easy Access Outfit: Opt for clothing that allows easy diaper changes, such as onesies with snaps at the bottom or separates that can be quickly taken off and put back on.
  • Extra Clothes: Pack spare clothes in your carry-on in case of spills or unexpected situations during the flight.
  • Comfortable Footwear: For infants, soft booties or socks are ideal for keeping their feet warm and comfortable. Avoid shoes or anything constricting.
  • Consider the Weather: Depending on your destination’s climate, dress your baby accordingly. Bring a light jacket or blanket for cooler temperatures.
  • Don’t forget accessories: Bring a sun hat for sunny destinations, a light jacket for colder climates, and a bib for messy eaters.
  • Comfort items: Pack your baby’s favourite blanket, teddy bear, or toy to provide comfort and familiarity during the flight.

Check-in

Are there any special procedures or assistance available for families with infants during the check-in process?

While most airports in India do not have dedicated check-in counters for families with infants, most airlines and airports offer special procedures and assistance:

  • Assistance lanes: Some airports have designated lanes for passengers requiring additional assistance, including families with young children. These lanes often have shorter queues and more helpful staff.
  • Priority boarding: Most airlines offer priority boarding for families with infants. Inform the airline at check-in or gate personnel upon arrival, and they will guide you accordingly.
  • Baggage assistance: Request baggage assistance at the check-in counter, especially if you’re carrying strollers. Some airlines might offer baggage porters to help you navigate the airport.
  • Family check-in areas: Some airports have dedicated family check-in areas with play areas or comfortable seating to keep babies occupied while waiting.
  • Baby care facilities: Most airports have designated rooms or baby care areas within the airport terminals for diaper changing, feeding, or pumping needs.

Can I bring a stroller or car seat to the check-in counter for an infant?

Yes, you can bring a stroller and/or car seat to the check-in counter for an infant. However, they may not be allowed as carry-on luggage.

  • Stroller: Gate-check is often available for strollers, meaning you use it until boarding and then hand it to the staff. Some airlines might require checking it in with luggage. Smaller, foldable strollers might be allowed as carry-on by some airlines, but check your airline’s size and weight limitations.
  • Car seat: Airlines rarely permit car seats as carry-on due to size and weight restrictions. Check if your specific car seat qualifies under their guidelines. Most airlines allow car seats as checked baggage.

Tips: Don’t forget to label your stroller and car seat with your contact information. Put your car seat in a travel bag to protect it during handling.

How much luggage allowance is permitted for an infant traveling by air?

Following is the luggage allowance for domestic flights by various airlines:

  • Air India: Infants under the age of two are allowed one piece of check-in baggage weighing up to 10kg for free.
  • IndiGo: For domestic travel, infants are entitled to one handbag up to 7 kgs. However, there’s no check-in baggage allowance for infants. You can bring along a stroller or baby pram without any extra charge.
  • Vistara: Allows an additional 7kg baggage as infant baggage for domestic travel, and an additional 10kg baggage allowance for international travel. You have a choice of using it as either check-in baggage or hand baggage, as per your convenience.
  • SpiceJet & Akasa: An additional piece of hand baggage with a maximum weight of 7 kg is allowed for passengers with infants.

Are there any restrictions or guidelines for carrying baby essentials like formula, breast milk, or baby food through airport security?

You can bring baby essentials like formula, breast milk or baby food in reasonable quantities both in carry-on and check-in luggage. Quantities greater than 100 ml are allowed by almost all airlines. Most security personnel are understanding and helpful towards parents traveling with infants.

Follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth and stress-free airport security experience with your baby essentials.

  • Pack reasonable quantities: Pack enough formula, breast milk, or baby food for your flight and potential delays. Most airlines allow this beyond your regular liquid allowance.
  • Declare & Label: Inform security about these items and clearly label all containers with type of content (e.g., formula, breast milk, baby food).
  • Packaging: Opt for individual containers within a resealable bag for liquids like formula or breast milk. Keep baby food in original packaging if possible.
  • Be prepared for checks: Security might ask you to taste formula or breast milk, open a container of baby food, or even run additional scans. Patience and cooperation are key!

Is there a separate security screening process for infants and their belongings?

No, there is no separate security screening process for infants and their belongings. You’ll go through together, but expect extra checks for baby food, formula, and milk. Follow the guidelines mentioned in the previous answer for a smooth check-in experience.

Are there facilities available for diaper changing or baby care in the airport terminals?

Yes. Most airports in India provide dedicated facilities for diaper changing and baby care.

You can expect the following facilities in the baby care facilities at the airports:

  • Nursing Rooms: These are private spots specially set up for breastfeeding moms. They usually have comfortable seats and sometimes even electrical outlets for breast pumps.
  • Changing Tables: These are like dedicated stations for changing diapers. They have clean surfaces and often provide wipes or disposable mats to keep things hygienic.
  • Baby Food Areas: You might find places with sinks and counters where you can easily prepare bottled formula or baby food.
  • Play Areas: Some terminals have special spots with toys and soft mats to keep your little one happily entertained while you take a break.

Can I request a bassinet or special seating arrangement for an infant during check-in?

You can definitely request a bassinet or special seating for your infant during check-in, however it may not be guaranteed.

  • Bassinets: Bassinets are typically limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Requesting at check-in is your best bet, though some airlines allow pre-booking online. Bassinets are usually provided for infants under 6 months old and weighing less than 20 pounds (10 kg). Air India, Vistara and SpiceJet provide bassinets for the domestic flights whereas IndiGo and Akasa don’t.
  • Special Seating:
    • Bulkhead seats: These front-row seats offer more legroom for bassinets (if available) and are ideal for diaper changes.
    • Window seats: In absence of bassinets, window seats can be helpful for soothing your baby with the calming view.
    • Exit rows: Airlines do not allow infants to be seated in the exit rows due to safety regulations.

During Flight

What should I pack in my carry-on bag for my infant during the flight?

Here’s the packing checklist for the carry-on baggage.

  • Diapers: Follow the rule of thumb- 1.5 diapers per hour of the journey. (e.g. If your journey is of 3 hours, pack 5 diapers.)
  • Diaper changing mat: Carry at least two portable and waterproof diaper changing mats. Most diaper bags come with a changing pad, this will also help as an extra.
  • Diaper cream: Pack your usual diaper rash cream to avoid any allergies due to a new cream.
  • Wipes: Carry in sufficient quantities. Along with the diaper duties, you can use them for spillage, blowout, etc.
  • Disposable bags: Pack these for soiled diapers and wipes to keep your bag and the airplane clean.
  • Formula or breast milk: Carry pre-measured portions or ready-to-feed bottles if your baby uses formula. Pack breast milk in storage bags within ice packs
  • Sterilized bottles: For formula-fed babies, ensure you have enough clean bottles for the journey.
  • Burp clothes or bibs: Make sure to pack these for inevitable spills.
  • Snacks: If your baby is eating solids, pack some healthy and non-messy snacks like puffs, teething crackers, or fruit pouches.
  • Extra Clothes: Pack at least one extra outfit for your baby in case of spills or accidents. Carry an extra pair of clothes for yourself as well.
  • Blanket and swaddle: Avoid using blankets provided by airlines for the babies. Carry a soft blanket or swaddle to keep your baby warm and comfortable during the flight. Remember planes can get chilly. You can use a swaddle as a covering cloth during breastfeeding or else you can use a dupatta.
  • Toys: Pack your baby’s favourite stuffed animal or a couple of age-appropriate toys to keep them entertained during the flight.
  • Pacifier or teether: If your baby uses a pacifier or teether, bring it along to soothe them during takeoff and landing.
  • Medicines: Pack any regular medications your baby needs, along with a working thermometer. For information on emergency medicines, check this.

Are there facilities for diaper changing or baby care onboard?

Dedicated diaper changing facilities aren’t available on airplanes in India, however, most airlines do offer some options to make life easier with your little one onboard:

  • Airplane lavatories: Most airplanes have spacious lavatories where you can comfortably change your baby’s diaper. They typically have a fold-down changing table or sufficient shelf space.
  • Bulkhead seats: If you have access to a bulkhead seat, the extra legroom provides more space for diaper changes. Make sure to place a waterproof changing mat on the seat for added hygiene.
  • Nursing room: While it is rare to have dedicated nursing rooms on airplanes in India, airlines allow you to breastfeed your baby on your seat. It is always a good idea to check with the flight attendants about the nursing room/area onboard.
  • Baby food warmers: Certain aircrafts have microwaves or hot water dispensers you can use to warm formula or baby food if needed.

Always seek assistance from flight attendance when needed, especially if you don’t have anyone to help during the travel.

What are the best ways to handle air pressure changes during takeoff and landing for my infant?

Breastfeed your baby or offer a bottle/pacifier during takeoff and landing. Sucking helps equalize pressure in the middle ear, making it easier for them to adjust. Start feeding just before takeoff and continue during ascent. If your baby stops sucking, gently encourage them to resume.

What should I do if my baby starts crying during the flight?

A crying baby on a flight can be stressful for both you and your fellow passengers, but remember, it’s totally normal! First of all, stay calm and assess the situation.

  • Take a deep breath: Remember, your own anxiety can transfer to your baby. Stay calm and reassuring, and your baby will likely pick up on your positive energy.
  • Identify the cause: Is your baby hungry, tired, uncomfortable, or simply overwhelmed by the new environment? Knowing the reason can help you choose the best response.
  • Try to soothe your baby:
    • Feeding: If your baby is hungry, offer breast milk, formula, or a bottle. Sucking can be calming and helps regulate pressure in their ears.
    • Change their diaper: A wet or dirty diaper can definitely cause discomfort. Check and change if needed.
    • Cuddle and rock: Physical closeness can be incredibly soothing for babies. Hold them close, rock them gently, and sing or hum calming songs.
    • Offer distractions: Toys, small books, or even just looking out the window can distract your baby and momentarily take their mind off the crying.
    • Walk around the cabin: Gently pacing the aisle with your baby can sometimes be calming and helpful for both of you.
  • Ask for help: Don’t hesitate to ask flight attendants for help. They have experience dealing with babies and can offer helpful advice or even hold your baby for a while if needed. Other passengers might be surprisingly understanding, and seek their help if offered.

Are there any specific guidelines for walking or moving around the cabin with an infant?

While most airlines and passengers are understanding of parents traveling with babies, there are some guidelines for walking around the cabin with your infant:

  • Turbulence: Always prioritize safety. During turbulence, remain seated with your baby securely fastened.
  • Seatbelt signs: Respect seatbelt signs and avoid walking when they’re illuminated for takeoff, landing, or taxiing.
  • Clear the aisles: Ensure the aisle is clear and avoid obstructing other passengers when moving around.
  • Minimize disruptions: Try to walk during less busy times. Minimize noise and be mindful of others’ comfort.
  • Keep it short: Extended walks might not be ideal. Consider short strolls to stretch your legs and soothe your baby, then return to your seat.
  • Communication: Inform a flight attendant about your intention to walk, especially if you need assistance with overhead compartments or tray tables.

Can I use a baby carrier or sling during the flight?

You can bring a baby carrier or sling on board. Please note that only few airlines allow them onboard. These can only be used when the seat belt sign is off. Carriers and slings cannot be during takeoff and landing. For shorter flights, it may not be convenient to use a carrier or sling.

What should I do if my baby gets sick during the flight?

We hope this never happens with anybody, but unfortunately if it does, follow the steps below to handle the situation effectively.

1. Assess the situation:

  • Observe your baby’s symptoms: Is it a fever, cough, vomiting, diarrhoea, or something else?
  • Consider the context: Did they eat or drink anything unusual before the flight? Have they been exposed to anyone sick recently?

2. Comfort and soothe your baby:

  • Offer fluids: Water, breast milk, or formula can help prevent dehydration and keep them comfortable.
  • Provide age-appropriate medication: If you brought any medication like fever reducers or pain relievers, consult the dosage instructions and administer as needed.
  • Offer comfort items: Familiar toys, blankets, or a pacifier can be soothing and distracting.

3. Monitor the situation:

  • Keep an eye on your baby’s condition and symptoms. If they worsen or seem concerning, inform the flight attendants immediately.
  • Be attentive to their needs: Offer fluids, food (if older), and change diapers promptly to avoid discomfort

4. Inform the flight attendants:

  • They are trained to handle various situations, including a sick passenger. They can provide additional assistance, medication if needed, or contact ground medical personnel upon landing.

When to seek immediate medical attention:

  • High fever exceeding 100.4°F (38°C)
  • Difficulty breathing or persistent cough
  • Severe vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Dehydration symptoms like dry mouth, sunken eyes, or decreased urination
  • Lethargy or unresponsiveness
